The main use my students will get from these computers is access to a research-based reading intervention program, ReadNaturally, that is proven to improve reading, specifically benefiting students with Reading Disabilities by targeting reading fluency. All of the students in my reading intervention classes are diagnosed with a reading disability and are more than two grade levels behind in reading. They have participated in many other reading intervention programs, but this one particular focuses on the common need of reading fluency. It is individualized for each student's unique needs and levels, and significantly increases interest and buy in to the program as students primarily work on the computer. It is so important for these students to improve their reading in 6th grade because next year, they will be moving up to high school. The computers will not only allow access to ReadNaturally, but will also allow access to different meditation websites and apps students with Emotional/Behavioral diagnoses can utilize for calming breaks throughout the day to help regulate emotions. Additionally, computers will be used for research, writing, class projects, current events, and so much more! In this day and age, children growing up without technology are at a disadvantage to their counterparts when entering high school, college, the work force, and adult life. Incorporating technology into the classroom levels the playing field for my students who deserve an equitable education.
