Our school subscribes to Lexia Core 5 Learning. A computer program that tracks and adjusts to the level of the individual playing the game. The students think they are playing games but they are actually practicing core concepts for reading. I get reports displaying their strengths and weaknesses to help me guide my teaching for their individual needs. A cozy computer center will increase their skill and technological ability. Coming from low income homes, my students have very little exposure to technology. Their future educational and career opportunities depend on these skills. I know if I need to know something the internet is where I go. Navigating it for educational purposes is essential to learning. In kindergarten we practice independent work through centers activities. The students are divided into groups of 4. I develop activities that focus on the skills we are practicing each week. It would be so great if we had a computer center where I could set them up with Lexia or another site for focused practice. Four computers would allow us to have a group practice skills in all subjects from reading to science to, obviously, keyboard practice.
