In the Winter of 2008, my Second Graders will begin their Open Court Language Arts Unit entitled "Kindness". They are exposed to literature in various genres such as fantasy, realistic fiction, folk tales, fairy tales, and true life adventures all relating to the theme of kindness. They will be reading the folk tale "The Elves and the Shoemaker" in which they learn that kindness can be reciprocal. (In addition, I teach them about "the gift of giving" using Shel Silverstein's "The Giving Tree"). Last year our school participated in an Arts in Education program and it will continue this year. Students were exposed to drama, music, dance and visual arts. Drama was clearly a favorite and I thought about how beneficial it would be to expose my students to live theater. (Many of my underprivileged students have never attended a play). Seeing "Elves" come to life would enhance their experience and knowledge of kindness.
