I try to encourage my students to read whenever they have a free moment. We talk about having "micro reads" available in their book boxes so that if they finish early and there are only a few minutes before we transition, they can have access to awesome reading materials quickly! Time for Kids are perfect for this. Students love learning about the world through these articles about science, social studies, and personal narratives. Who knows, maybe the next big journalist is in my classroom! In third grade we learn how to write opinion pieces. While we learn to do this, we look at examples of articles written by journalists while we imagine we are real journalists!
