Focused purposeful read alouds are the goal for my classroom library. Although students have freedom to choose books in my classroom, they are lacking the access to books that have been purposefully placed to teach diversity and character. Reflection and representation in a classroom library allow students to see themselves within the pages of a book. I have selected books that are reflective of Hispanic-Mexican culture. Culturally reflective titles help shape student identity and allow students to see themselves within the stories' plots. If students can culturally identify in books, then it's also important for them to be able to see into the lives of others. This year, my class will be joining the Global Read Aloud, where we will explore books with an "emphasis on perspective, on understanding others, on connecting and change". We will be connecting with other classrooms through Google Hangouts to discuss the books written by indigenous writers, Julie Flett and Monique Gray Smith. Character education is another priority for my classroom library. Books have the power to shape young minds. They can instill kindness, teach empathy, and inspire perseverance. Maria Dismondy is a focus author whose books tell about kindness, courage, friendship, empathy, and standing up for others. Purposeful read alouds expose students to messages that create and establish the classroom climate and student mindset.
