My classroom is part of a new journey where a team of teachers is trying to change the way students experience high school. We are providing a community building team to allow students the freedom and flexibility in their learning styles. I want to be able to create a classroom where students have a choice in where they learn within the classroom. The materials I have requested will provide options for students to choose how and where they learn best depending on their needs. The students will be able to find a spot on the comfy rug while they take notes, collaborate with peers or work individually. The overhead lighting can become strenuous on students' eyes. The lamps will provide students with the opportunity to work but in dimmer lit spaces to change the ambiance of the room. Students will be able to leave positive messages, ideas and opinions on the dry erase dots throughout the room to motivate and inspire their peers. Students will be able to decorate their classroom space with the marquee signs and create an inviting environment for themselves while they learn. Creating different spaces within a classroom allow students to make a choice every day in the atmosphere they learn in. In my classroom I envision students sitting on stools or chairs, sitting on tables, standing at tables and even laying on the rugs. When students walk into the door of my classroom I want them to feel like they are walking into a different atmosphere other than the "average" classroom. These are not average students and I am not an average teacher. I am a part of a program that is trying to break the mold on average.
