Narrative intervention is a research based method that uses literacy to build comprehension and vocabulary skills. Many of my kiddos struggle in the classroom as a result of limited exposure and background knowledge related to academic vocabulary and concepts. Oral narrative intervention targets building language, comprehension, and vocabulary through literacy in a horizontal hierarchical approach. These are books that align with common core standards with various oral language vocabulary practice exercises, story retell, and comprehension strategies. The books used in these units tie into many of the classroom units taught at my school, and provide additional reinforcement and exposure for students that have speech and language disabilities. I am seeking a solid collection of books that can target basic story structure and that will be paired with non-fiction text for added reinforcement of learned material. Vocabulary that is directly taught with one book, is incorporated into the story retell and/or a group project that is based on the learned expository material. Each complete unit typically takes a total of 6, 20 minute sessions in small groups of two or three. The first week focuses on the fiction text with an emphasis on learning new vocabulary and generating an oral narrative retell using pictography (students use 6 boxes to draw the basic story grammar elements to help them remember the sequence and parts of the story)and the learned vocabulary words (or "sparkle words"). In the second week, I use a non-fiction text that connects to the first book read the previous week. They review learned vocabulary and apply it to more academic concepts. They then create a project- this could be a poster, a PowerPoint, or an art project- and explain how it connects to both texts. We are requesting such items as Guided Reading Collections for kindergarten though fourth grade, along with Level K and J book sets.
