If we get a color printer my students will be able to show off what they have learned by making colorful science fair projects! Students are enthusiastic about experimenting and creating amazing display boards to highlight their outcomes. My students are very excited to create their own "genetically engineered" animal and use the color printer to show off their new species. Our class has been studying the experiments of Gregor Mendel and the pea plants he cross pollinated. To incorporate math and science my students are doing a project taking two or more actual species of animals and determining what it would look like if they could genetically alter them to create an entirely new species. For instance, one group wants to cross a hummingbird with a bumble bee to create a "humming bee". My students plan to study each type of animal to see if they can determine dominant and recessive traits in each species and create an animal that is proportional in size. They will then have to use a program to design their animal on the computer. Since many of my students are visual learners, the color printer would enable them to differentiate the different body parts of the animal with color. For history, when we study about Hitler in World War II, my students will create a map that they can color code to show just how Hitler's army move through Europe taking over country after country. Their excitement is contagious and I am equally excited for their creations. This printer would mean so much to my disadvantaged learners. We are very anxious to get our project funded so they can begin their creations.
