In order to be an effective science teacher, I need to prepare my students for the 21st century through STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) based lessons. These lessons provide opportunities for students to learn problem solving, designing, asking questions, collaborating, re-designing, and modeling. Tablets provide a perfect platform to implement STEM based lessons that prepare my students for the 21st century. Amazon Fire tablets are a dependable and affordable option to implement a variety of STEM based lessons in the science classroom. Amazon Fire tablets are easily transported and used. The cases will serve to keep the tablets safe for current and future students. The wide variety of science apps and simulations will help create engaging lessons. Additionally, the internet provides an opportunity for students to discover answers to their own questions while the teacher monitors. There are several additional ways the Fire Tablets will be used in STEM based lessons. STEM includes a combination of science, technology, engineering, and math fields where students apply their knowledge and curiosity. First, tablets provide an opportunity for collaboration through class poll applications and shared google docs. Additionally, students can improve their coding literacy by learning how to code SCRATH and Python. There are also several robots that can be programed through a tablet such as Sphero, Lego Mindstorms, and Ozobots. Probes (motion, temperature, etc.) can also be attached in order for students to receive live data during experiments. Additionally, students can create models while practicing scale and math through Minecraft labs and Augmented Reality. Google docs and science notebook apps provide a place where students can record data from experiments. The camera will be useful for QR code activities and allow students to take pictures and videos during experiments.
