My fourth grade class will learn about poetry and poets through close reading and writing to learn. They will track what Jack, the main character, is learning about poetry alongside their own learning though close readings of other poetry pieces. They will also experiment with writing their own poetry inspired by their reading and a deep analysis of Jack's character. Students will learn to write informational paragraphs in order to summarize the text when it is finished. In the last unit of the module, students will consider which of the poems they read inspired them the most and select a poet to study more deeply. Students will learn to write and share an essay about their selected poet, read aloud a poem their poet, and share their original inspired poem.
