When it comes to learning, one size does NOT fit all! When I first started teaching many years ago, I wondered why so many kids struggled with simply sitting at their desks (seems simple enough, right?!). But because all children are unique, it makes sense that they have different needs- even when it comes to seating. For students, freedom of choice is an engaging and powerful concept that promotes independence, responsibility, and success. When given a variety of seating options, my fifth graders are able to find what works for them. I have slowly been building up to a classroom that provides flexible seating, and so far, the results have been amazing! Students are able to stay focused and be productive- even when sitting on a wobble stool or relaxing in a bean bag chair! These last few items will complete our flexible classroom and provide even more ways for my students to succeed!
