The students at our school bring a high incidence of poverty with them to school (over 80% of our students receive free and reduced lunch.) Because our school is very small, there are very few activities for our students. We do offer a few sports, but the teams are small and are mostly unsuccessful. Music is the only one of the arts taught at the Middle School or High School, and students have become accustomed to expecting less than they deserve. Walkerville is a very small rural community filled with many different types of families. There are some intact families with working parents, but many of the students live with a single parent, grandparents or other relatives and friends, relying on social programs for subsistence. There are a few local businesses and two churches, but there is not much for students to do in the community. The Walkerville students have learned to expect less than they deserve.
