The books I am requesting will be for students to read on their own and for me to use during read-alouds. Students are given opportunities to read during the day and they need books that will help widen their world view. The stories I've selected will teach them history about their ancestors and those of their classmates. Some requested titles include My Name if Bilal, I Lived on Butterfly Hill, Harvesting Hope, Last Stop on Market Street, One Green Apple, and Eight Days: A Story of Haiti. By carefully selecting multicultural books we can have discussions about current events and ways to make the world a better place. When students are given the opportunity to discuss hard issues or topics they can learn from each other and become more prepared to be an active and kind citizen in this world. Quality literature not only helps students become better readers, but it can open up their world as well.
