All students need their own space (I call it a space bubble). In order for them to be focused at the carpet I want them to be comfortable. I also want to encourage strong relationships among all students in my classroom and don't want them stepping on fingers and toes as they navigate their way to their spot. Having this specific rug helps me manage my class a bit better as well. I can use the colors as ways to dismiss them from the carpet. I can also use the perfect squares, and their locations, to have my students work in pairs. Student led learning is so much more effective and I can't wait to see how this rug transforms the learning environment that I've created for my students! I plan on using the carpet to teach whole group instruction before moving students into centers; so the carpet will be used for a variety of subject areas. I also believe that the carpet serves as a basic need. Students need a place of their own. One where they feel comfortable and empowered to learn!
