Negotiating skills are something that must be learned and practiced. The PE choreography unit that I began 3 years ago has allowed me to create the perfect scenario for students to practice and learn active listening, collaborating, or problem solving just to mention a few. Imagine having to choose a song, come up with dancing steps, and then practicing repeatedly until when you least expected you have achieved team synchrony! That is exactly what my tigers ( our school mascot) need to do. I have established January as the month in which groups ranging from 3 to 5 kiddos, 9-11 years-old negotiate among themselves with the goal to have a dance choreography that will be shared in our February 14 class party. I advice, observe, and sometimes suggest but 95% of the time, students are deciding without my intervention. It is incredible to see how class, race, and gender boundaries vanish as they talk, vote, agree, disagree, and learn to listen to each other to come up with a dance choreography. Through this process they are able to overcome shyness, they learn to be open minded, and are able to discover the beauty of having a team that is there for you. Having bluetooth speakers will allow the kids to better use their practice time. Most of them bring a device from home but it has always been a challenge to get the speakers so that they can listen to the song of their choice as they practice out on the field. I am sure that this equipment will allow them to learn Helen Keller's golden lesson: Alone we can do so little, together we can do so much."
