I have taken part in a shift across many current classrooms in rethinking the way that a classroom should be designed to meet the needs of all learners. Over the course of my career in teaching, I have noticed that a majority of my students do not benefit from sitting in a chair all day long. Think about where you work best. Is it at the exact same spot all day long where you have been told to sit? Is that spot a hard chair and a desk or table that you cannot maneuver in any way? If you wouldn't want to work in an environment like that, how can we expect our students to? Allowing students to have flexible seating choices is one important piece of student engagement, especially in younger grades. This project will help to create a more flexible classroom environment for my students and enhance the academic choices that students get to make in my classroom on a daily basis. I have begun funding this project myself, making crate chairs, and purchasing scoop chairs. I would love to add a variety of flexible seating options, such as floor cushions, portable desk trays, wobbly chairs, and stability balance discs.
