I recently started teaching 7th Grade English Language Arts at a small charter school. The school is fifteen blocks from epicenter of the riots and the neighborhood continues to heal its wounds after a century My students need high interest graphic novels to make reading accessible and exciting. 36 out of 83 students in the 7th grade are in Special Ed and many of them have reading disabilities. Moreover, another 26 of the 83 students recently arrived in the United States and are learning English for the first time. Research clearly demonstrates that graphic novels help English Language Learners expand their vocabulary and reading comprehension.
