Sit to Suit and Sooth: Want to move? Rock? Jiggle your foot? leg? We all strive to 'sit still' to pay attention but how realistic is that? Sometimes moving indiscreetly can actually help one stay focused. Many students face challenges in staying focused and keeping their bodies regulated. Excessive body movement can distract from being productive and focused in learning and social situations. Alternatives for seating should be a natural in classrooms and offices. So many options can be made to students: ball chairs that allow discreet bouncing, wobble stools for rocking or postural changes, stability balls on stabilizer discs, and stretch bands to push or kick with feet or standing on balance discs are just some. By increasing self awareness and teaching our students strategies to help them self regulate their bodies will promote productivity later as workers and community members.
