My students are heritage Spanish speakers - they have an understanding of Spanish but, by the end of the school year, my goal is for them to love literature, culture, and history of Latin America. My biggest challenge is providing culturally relevant materials that will expand their literacy options. My students have an understanding of Spanish because of their home life, but most of them have not been introduced to literature, culture and history in Spanish. These materials will help my students develop their pride in being bilingual and bicultural. They will not only encourage higher level thinking skills but also, and most importantly, they will promote great discussions in Spanish at school and at home.
