Having an augmented reality sandbox in our Innovation lab will provide students exciting opportunities to explore topography, along with many other science topics in a hands-on, interactive, and dynamic way. This powerful educational tool allows students to mold sand by hand, bringing the landscape to life right in front of their eyes. The sandbox is augmented in real-time with an elevation color map, topographic contour lines, and simulated water. The materials requested will allow us to build this interactive sandbox. The swivel castor wheels will allow it to be mobile so that all students can have access to it. The projector, mount, Kinect, Kinect adapter, and NVidia GeForce are required to project the topographic images, maps, and weather onto the sand. Lots of sand is needed to fill the sandbox so students can manipulate the sand to build and explore different topographic landscapes. Students will be engaged and develop a passion for STEM with materials like the augmented reality sandbox.
