My students are in 3rd grade, but enter the school year at different reading levels, with some kids coming in as non-readers. Having a leveled library, allows my students to have easy access to a variety of books to accommodate their various reading levels. Throughout the year my students will become more advanced readers, and it is important for my kids to have access to books on and above their reading level. I believe that reading opens doors. I teach in Tulsa, OK. In Oklahoma, at the end of the 3rd grade, students take a state-mandated standardized reading test. If students are not reading on or above grade level, they do not get to move on to 4th grade. This test puts an incredible amount of pressure on students, and it is imperative that my kids improve their reading levels. My students are capable of achieving their dreams. There is no reason to close the door on their future, and this library will help keep those doors open.
