I have the privilege of working with students and families that come from a variety of backgrounds. My students attend a school in Northwestern Dallas that is 98% Latino and 2% African American or Multi-Racial. My classroom is rich with different cultures, different countries of origin, different languages, and different experiences. Some of my students have attended schools in the United States throughout their entire schooling experience, while others are relatively new to the country, arriving from countries such as: El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Peru, and Mexico. What ties all of us together is trying to have access to experiences by fully diving into books and stories with which we feel connected to their characters, settings, and plots. My classroom is full of scholars that are ready to invest time to read great books that are culturally responsive to their needs.
