Because of my students' disabilities, social skills do not come naturally to them. Skills like taking turns, asking for help, carrying on a conversation, etc, do not come naturally to my students. For most people, these skills are picked up through every day interactions (and yes, some teaching in the younger grades) and can be integrated into daily life without even thinking. For my students, though, these skills must be explicitly taught, practiced, and tested to ensure success. It is never a "one and done" situation One of the best ways to naturally work social skills instruction into the day is through read alouds! Stories are a fun and easy way for students to see themselves in the characters. With these read aloud stories, by students can see real life situations in which they need to listen, take turns, make friends, and so on. We can use the situations and skills in the stories to engage in group discussions and role playing practice. Often times, these students can use these stories as reminders on how to act in new social situations.
