My students arrive each morning with an eagerness to learn and collaborate with classmates. My vision is to have my students start each day with some hands-on exploratory fun. Because our standards-based curriculum is incredibly rigorous, I love the idea of the kids easing into the school day with self-directed exploration. Our morning routine sets the tone for the day, and I can only imagine how our day will progress if they start it by creating, building, and collaborating. Having a variety of building tools will give my second graders the opportunity to start their day in a positive, creative, and productive way. My second graders will use the Magna-Tiles, Imagination Builders, Pipe Builders, Snap and Swivel Design Sets, and Building Set when they come into the classroom in the morning as an alternative to more traditional morning worksheets. Several of the students in my inclusion class are hesitant to come to school. Making connections with their classmates isn't always easy, as they are pulled from the classroom frequently throughout the day. Having non-threatening and enjoyable experiences as soon as they come into the classroom will give them something to look forward to as well as the opportunity to connect with one another in an unstructured way. I love the idea of having my students start each day working together, problem-solving, and stretching their creativity.
