Scholastic News Magazine will support my students’ growth in literacy. This magazine provides excellent opportunities for instruction in the identification and usage of text features to aid in non-fiction comprehension. As adults, we know what text features such as headings, subheadings, captions, and bold words tell us about what we’re about to read, but students need instruction and practice to be able to make use of these features. Among other things, as they dig into the kid-friendly articles, students will work to determine facts, generalizations, and opinions. They’ll search for problems and solutions, and will determine causes and effects. They will form fact based opinions, learn to debate, and will create strong, thoughtful responses. While students practice their comprehension skills, they’ll be learning about current events and will gain important knowledge about what is going on in our world, both near and far. This magazine is great because it provides important online differentiation (such as text to speech and Spanish translations). Such differentiation will help me to meet all my students’ needs. Thank you so much for helping my kids out!
