One area my students struggle the most with is listening without distractions. Having taught in other 4K programs, I know first hand how how distracting a circle time rug can be as students will notice a speck of paper or piece of tape and become distracted from a great learning opportunity. I'm requesting one large circle time carpet for my students as their current circle time carpet is severely stained and left with tape residue from years of use. This carpet is where most of our learning will occur such as morning meeting, large group learning, small group literacy and math, and center time blocks. In my classroom, we practice listening and speaking daily using cooperative learning strategies. The addition of a nice clean rug would give my students a much needed boost of practice in the areas of listening and speaking as they will feel less distracted by stains and sticky tape residue and become more engaged in activities that promote their learning. Students who are not distracted learn to self-regulate and engage in their own learning.
