Strong writing skills are key to success in high school, college, and beyond, in the professional world. Roughly 80% of students come to my class in 7th grade unable to execute basic writing tasks. As a result, I made writing one of my top priorities this past year. Students finished the year with an independent writing project and were able to write theses that stated defensible arguments, provide evidence to support multiple claims, and analyze their evidence to find deeper meaning. It was inspiring to see this drastic transformation. The key to my students' writing transformation was in continual feedback. Students can learn how to write a thesis and see exemplars, but the key to deeper learning is in the cycle of practice, feedback, and revision. They need to write a thesis, receive constructive feedback, and then re-write it to meet or exceed expectations. The step of re-writing with feedback is where knowledge clicks in students' brains, and the skill becomes second nature. I want to bring Qalaxia into my classroom to further enhance this process. Qalaxia is an online platform where students can receive supplemental writing assistance and feedback from professionals. Students will still be receiving regular writing instruction from me, but with even more support. This platform will enable students to go through the writing feedback cycle monthly. It is also an opportunity for them to submit their writing on an outside platform to receive feedback from professionals. Writing for an authentic audience will spur them to higher standards more quickly and effectively. One of my biggest goals as an educator is for students to be able to express their ideas and opinions in ways that will be heard. Qalaxia will help aid them in discovering their writing voices and making them strong.
