When students are introduced to drumming, there are many advantages that are created within the music classroom and within their academic and social settings. When students are engaged in drumming activities, both sides of the brain are active and working. It has also shown to help students with decision-making skills, impulse control, and increased memory. Some drums require students to use their core muscles to play and also requires hand-eye coordination. There are many advantages when students participate in drumming activities. In my class, there is a lot of movement, however, there are times when students sit and learn fundamentals. Many students have sensory needs that can be met with flexible seating options. Many times there are students that will sit on a ball in order to keep themselves under control. Wobble stools, bubble cushions, and small balls will create multiple options for my students focus and pay attention when needed.
