Imagine how inviting it would be to have a designated reading area in which students can read high-interest, rigorous materials comfortably, and all students having resources and notes at their fingertips in their personal binder! A classroom should be a welcoming place where students are comfortable enough to put all of their attention towards learning. I am seeking to provide my students with Scholastic Upfront magazine, beanbag chairs to create a comfortable reading area in the classroom, and binders to assist with organization. The materials for this project will help my students become organized, motivated, and productive readers. The New York Times Upfront magazines, that are filled with high-interest, relevant articles, will engage my students in reading. I can use the NY Times Upfront magazines to teach many strategies necessary for students to become lifelong readers and learners. For instance, shorter, high-interest text lends itself well to engaging students and providing a good foundation from which to build the stamina and self-efficacy students need in order to read longer texts. The nonfiction topics will support the need to develop vocabulary, identify the main idea of the text, and find evidence to support an author’s claim. Alternate, comfortable seating will provide students with a relaxing area in which to read quietly or gather as a small group to discuss their reading. In addition, our students would benefit from learning how to organize their materials. Through the use of three-ring binders, I will be able to teach students how to organize their work and maintain the resources that will help them further develop their literacy skills including accelerated phonics, syllabication, morphology, fluency, and reading comprehension. Having one binder in which to hold their materials will allow students to monitor their own progress and growth throughout the year.
