Students will be able to put their learning to use, building by doing. This will help make the middle school a community within a community by having continuity and collaboration. The students will use mathematics and physics when building their bridges The students will decide what is best for THEIR garden and grow and build together. They will determine what to plant and where to plant it. They will determine how much water and discover how to keep their produce from getting eaten by various animals. They will have to cultivate their garden for it to grow. They will grow together by working together. The students will use toothpicks and marshmallows to build the tallest building possible. After that they will evaluate the structure to determine the strongest aspects of the building. They will then build a bridge with toothpicks and glue. We will test the bridges weight bearing ability to confirm which structures uphold the best based on the structures. Meanwhile, the other half of the students will be starting the community garden; which will be maintained throughout the year and beyond by all of my students. They will start with evaluating the composition of the soil. They will need to determine what produce will grow the best in our climate. We will use the mason jars to first analyze the composition of the soil. Once the analysis is complete, we will use the potting soil and seeds to start our garden. Once seedlings sprout we will document the growth stages and continue to add to our outside garden for the benefit of the community.
