I teach social studies, reading, writing, cursive, and character education to a body of active, fidgety, yet enthusiastic 5th graders. I believe that social studies is a catalyst to foster literacy, mathematics, science and the arts. For this reason, lessons are integrated or "woven" accordingly. The intense needs of 21st century pupils mandates exposure to the glitz and the glam of digital media. Their learning experiences are also enhanced with costumes, visuals, crafts, projects, music, dance, and various types of technology. Instructional practices are altered to meet the needs of individual students. During any given instructional period, students may be spotted sitting on the floor, standing at podiums, walking in place, dancing, chanting, using gestures, singing, listening to audio books or a combination thereof.
