In both my 6th grade Pre-AP and regular ELA classes, we will participate in book clubs. Students will divide in small groups, and in those small groups choose a novel that they will like to read, analyze, and discuss the novel's literary elements. For my regular ELA classes, I need a class set of copies of The Crossover so that there are plenty for multiple book clubs. My Pre-AP class will only need a smaller set of Booked. Students will not only relate to Alexander's lead characters, but they experience everything that the characters undergo including courage, friendship, teamwork, and perseverance. With my students working in small groups, they will be responsible for setting a specific amount of reading pages per night, create their own discussion questions for the group, and share and discuss each of the questions and thoughts students had during their independent reading. Upon completion of reading the novel, groups will design/create a project of their choosing that best represents what they have learned from the novel.
