Many people know that our public schools were hit hard by budget cuts this year. One of the ways many schools are impacted by these cuts is through the loss of a full-time, BTU librarian in our media resource centers. Though a classroom library could never hope to replace the plethora of resources provided by a librarian, it will help ease the burden felt by students in an area where we simply cannot afford to fall short: literacy. In our school's fight to build literacy skills in our students every day, we have found that insufficient access to age-appropriate texts has presented a significant obstacle in our path to success. Though our Media Center has always been well stocked with design texts and resources, we are constantly working hard to provide our students with fiction texts that will be simultaneously engaging and just a bit challenging. This combination of interest and challenge is essential for creating a life-long love of reading. Bringing the library into the classroom means bringing significant gains in literacy skills one step closer. A classroom library will provide students with more opportunities to read for personal enjoyment every single day. The books on this list were specifically chosen because they represent a wide variety of classics, best sellers, and series that students love! Many types of interests are represented here, so there is something for everyone. Reading a book that was chosen BY the reader rather than chosen FOR the reader is a major factor in creating the life-long love of reading we seek. Of course, our books will also need a place to live, so I have asked for a few sturdy, metal bookshelves as well.
