Have you ever been so mad you feel like your head is going to explode? Maybe you say things you regret or need to leave the house to catch your breath. Due to prior traumatic experiences, my students struggle most with pushing that "pause button" between their emotions and actions. In the moment, they become their emotion rather than acknowledge what they feel. Our school is designed to teach kids how to manage such big feelings and model how to regulate through mindfulness and reflection. Many of these children do not have families to model expected behaviors and school is the primary place to learn such important life skills. The reflection room is an environment intended to use behavior as a learning experience and gain tools to success. I teach students that it's okay to need a minute to yourself and stress the importance of independence, proper use of coping skills, and calming strategies. When students use these sensory items and techniques, they are able to self-regulate back to baseline, process with an adult, and problem solve.
