Kinders learn from hands-on experiences, and it is especially important to give children in poverty real experiences. Each section of the 9-week Life Science unit consists of a literacy connection and hands-on science project. Each book donated is used as an "engage" portion of the different lessons covering the difference between living and non-living, parents and their offspring, the life cycle, biomes around the world, and caring for the environment. The students will study and observe the life cycles of chickens, butterfly’s and the praying mantis. They will record the their scientific observations as chicks begin to hatch, the metamorphosis of a butterfly, and hatching of a praying mantis. At the same time, we will be learning about the responsibility of caring for these animals responsibly. As they study biomes, they will use the realia to help create their biome project and present their reports and biomes to older students. At the end of the entire unit, we will brainstorm and carry out a plan for keeping our school grounds clean and how to recycle in our building. PS: the chicks have a good home to go to after they leave our class!
