In the elementary classroom, morning meeting - a time to gather in a group to greet each other, share hopes and goals, and take a look at the day ahead - is a crucial part of maintaining community and starting off the day in a positive way. Many other times throughout the day students gather to share ideas together, read and write together, strategize and solve problems together, and grow together. Most of these learning experiences take place in one main area- the rug. Unfortunately in my classroom, the rug is small, scratchy, and, well, kind of boring. My students have been so good about sitting next to partners or sprawling out with a book without complaining, but I can always tell after a few minutes that they are cramped, squished, or otherwise uncomfortable. I believe that this rug will definitely motivate students to want to spend more time engaging with one another side by side, not just at their desks.
