This is my seventh year teaching but it is my first year teaching fifth grade. As we have progressed through the year, I have noticed a dramatic increase in the students’ understanding and mastery of standards when the lesson includes hands on materials. Regular use of math games and manipulatives are just what my students need to keep them engaged and learning on a daily basis. I have found that some of the standards the students learn in fifth grade are an extension of what they have learned in fourth grade. Many times the students are encouraged to dig deep for a true understanding of a topic. The use of manipulatives is a real hands-on way for them to get a true feeling and understanding of what the standard is! I know that by getting the materials into their hands, they will truly be able to blossom, understand, and master the rigorous curriculum that is set out before them!
