In order to peak student excitement about Gas Laws, I require some simple supplies. The food saver canisters will allow me to demonstrate to the students what happens to the volume of an object when a vacuum is created. A marshmallow man created with marshmallows and toothpicks will be placed in a food saver container. The food saver will be used to create a vacuum in the jar, which will cause the marshmallow man to grow. Once the vacuum has been created, the jar lid will be lifted, which will cause the marshmallow man to dramatically shrivel up. This demonstration peaks students interest and makes them ask questions that can lead us into the gas laws. The food saver is a inexpensive alternative to a vacuum pump, which costs about 600 dollars. The syringes will be used to demonstrate the same concept, but students will be able to try it themselves. The syringe will be plugged on the end by their finger, and a mini marshmallow will be inside. When the students expand the volume of the syringe, they will see the effect on the volume of the marshmallow. For relatively little cost, these supplies will have a big impact on the students engagement while learning about the gas laws.
