I was lucky enough to get to teach this novel before at a previous school. I was able to see firsthand how kids were able to connect to the text in the graphic novel format, and it was incredibly beneficial. Since classes are composed of students with different learning styles, a graphic novel is a perfect way to access all learners. Through the use of Art Spiegelman's graphic novel, students are exposed to historical events in a firsthand retelling format, giving them access to a text in a way that's easier for them to grasp. There is something so unique about this text that allows for tough issues to be addressed in a way that effectively showcases the atrocities of the Holocaust while adding the heart of Art's father's personal accounts of events, and the real-life effects it had on the author and his family. This gives students a more personal account of the Holocaust while also delivering the facts in a digestible (although serious) way. I know that my eighth graders would benefit greatly from reading this graphic novel. In addition, all eighth-graders at my school would be able to read and experience the masterpiece that is Art Spiegelman's Maus. Not only is the story compelling and heartbreaking, but it is also filled with wonderfully-done art, which makes reading Maus a truly unique and invaluable experience.
