As many of you know, I am a Speech Language Pathologist in an Elementary School setting. As a Speech-Language Pathologist, I serve 65-70 children per year who are struggling with many different disorders that affect their ability to speak, communicate, and participate fully within social and school situations. Some of my students have articulation, phonological, and/or fluency disorders. iPad apps have been proven to increase attention and motivation in students who have gotten tired of practicing the same flashcards over and over again. Apps can also provide immediate feedback to students, in that they are able to record the students and allow them to listen to their own speech right then and there! The students can begin to learn how to self-monitor and correct their own speech independently in a more fun and exciting way! I also have many students who struggle with receptive and/or expressive language. Receptive language disorders affect my students' ability to participate in conversations with their peers and to understand materials presented in class, while expressive language disorders disrupt their ability to put words into order (grammar), use new vocabulary, and/or provide input during classroom discussions. Many of my students are working on asking and answering questions, following directions, learning and using new vocabulary, etc. MANY apps created and used by Speech Language Pathologists can provide fun and exciting ways to practice these skills in a highly motivating capacity. Finally, my school contains 4 Autism Spectrum Disorder units. A majority of the students in these classrooms have Speech and/or Language deficits, many of them being non-verbal or minimally verbal. iPads provide fun (and highly motivational for my children with behavior challenges) ways to practice pragmatic skills (social communication), language skills, and can be used as a communication device when needed.
