Holt Elementary Language Academy is a title one school which serves a broad spectrum of ethnic groups, but principally Hispanic and African American families. We serve northern Durham and are a magnet for global languages. Students with special needs come to Holt from families who want their children to have challenging IEPs (Individualized Education Plans) and a team of caring educators who will work with them. Increasingly, Durham Public Schools is committing its special educators to performing as co-teachers in the regular classroom. We work as a team along with ESL to address academic and social skills. I have responsibilities for the entire IEP, including language arts, math and social skills development. I specialize in reading instruction for first through fourth grades. Our reading groups are designed to build decoding and comprehension skills and enhance social skills through the use of social story.
