In my classroom, the two most popular centers are the building center and the maker space. These centers give students the opportunity to create, build, explore and tinker. In these centers, students respond to maker/building challenges by planning, creating, evaluating and re-designing. This school year my students responded to cool building and making challenges. One of our challenges was to create a spacecraft. Students used cardboard, cups, fabric pieces and recycled materials. They also had the opportunity to collaborate with a peer on ways to enhance/improve their design. The finished models of their spacecrafts were amazing! We need more materials to explore, design and create. Since the students are super engaged and busy in centers we get low on materials very quickly. In the building center and maker space students have the opportunity to build and create. Items such as wood cubes and craft sticks are awesome materials for children to construct and create models. We could use slime storage to store different items, and a shoe rack would be such a cool way to display student work. My students also really enjoying sewing and crocheting, so they need more fabric pieces and yarn. We would greatly appreciate any assistance to expand on their creativity.
