I would like to use a daily routine found in the Mrs. Wordsmith's ¨Word a Day¨ with the three classes of 3rd graders I will be teaching writing and word study to this year. I would also like to use the Mrs. Wordsmith's Storyteller's Illustrated Dictionary in our writer's workshop time. Vocabulary knowledge influences fluency and comprehension, and developing vocabulary within a daily routine directly affects achievement. Understanding nonfiction and informational texts is dependent on vocabulary knowledge. Marzano, a well known researcher, believes ¨multiple exposures, linguistic and non-linguistic definitions and games help reinforce word learning.¨ These resources would enhance understanding of vocabulary and encourage students to use the vocabulary in fun and creative ways in their writing.
