My goal as a math teacher is to bring real world learning experiences to my students that allow for the application of the skills and math processes they are learning. To do so, I create math investigations that align with the Common Core Math Standards which the students are working; a typical investigation involves many activities and experiments within a thematic focus. In all of the investigations I have led, I never see the students light up in quite the same as when they are working with living animals. The beetles crickets, and mealworms are exciting, but nothing compares to turtles! I am the proud owner of six turtles. My collection of turtles are integrated into the curriculum in numerous ways. From tracking and graphing their weights over time, to finding their speeds in mph, to calculating and measuring their volumes, to taking care of them and designing habitats, they are an integral part of everything we do in the class. The turtles currently reside in a large habitat I built outdoors. When I bring the turtles to school they sit in laundry baskets. I am hoping that people will help with the purchase of these indoor turtle habitats so they can permanently reside in our classroom. I can't imagine how excited the students will be! I would be so grateful for any donations that people are willing to make. I promise you that having the turtles in the classroom will not only make an impact on me, but also future students who will have the opportunity to work with them.
