Performing as an actress, in Indianapolis community theater, for the past 24 years, I am aware of the positive impact performing arts can have in overall life skills and academics. In my 6th Grade ELA class, we bring language to life by performing Reader's Theater, weekly, in class. We read plays based on stories; we create plays based on articles and text we read, and we perform for younger students, parents, and the community. In operating my ELA class, in this manner, my ESL students quickly became EXCITED to read new scripts. They were eager to be cast in a role and wanted to begin practicing to fluently read their lines and develop their characters. All of my students were able to engage and work together as a team to add their own creativity to the greater good of the team. Having a raised stage in the classroom, with music stands, will help create the "platform" to launch my kids into the upper eschelons of awesome!
