In a recent article on flexible seating, I read that keeping the focus on what's really important: the students, starts with their ability to make choices for themselves. As our world changes everyday, we cannot expect our students to flourish in the same learning environment established decades ago. As teachers of these 21st century learners, it is important to meet them where they are, and not require them to conform to an environment that is in our comfort zone. With this Donor's Choose project, I hope to do just that. It is my desire that these flexible seats will assist my students in their educational journey through 6th grade. I have many plans for them; including allowing students to choose different seats every day the first week of school. I want them to find the perfect match for their personality and learning style. As an ELA teacher, I can picture them being used for research, guided reading stations, independent study, and socratic seminar.
