Being a teacher for pre-k exceptional education students can be challenging as well as rewarding. We all know that even for typically developing preschool children, staying focused, being comfortable, maintaining personal space and completing tasks can be difficult. So for my students, it is very challenging. Often the seating and environment can be hard and uncomfortable. Getting and keeping my students engaged is one of the most important foundational steps in creating a successful learning environment. I want to create an environment where my students have opportunities and spaces to calm themselves, away from the over stimulation of the classroom. Where the effects of poor muscle tone, constant need for movement (fidgeting), sensory integration disorder, ASD, ADHD and other complications do not effect their learning in a negative way. By replacing the hard, cold, inflexible chairs we currently have with movement chairs such as yoga balls, stools, and rocking chairs at work tables and group times children will get the sensory input their bodies need to focus on their lessons and at the same time will be increasing their muscle tone, strengthening their core and improving their posture. Also I would like to add individual and mobile cushions, pillows, and yoga mats. By doing this it will allow the children to remain in comfortable seating either on the carpet or at a table, their choice. Adding bean bag chairs to quiet areas or reading areas creates an individual space for calming. Being cradled can help children focus better during quiet activities such as reading or listening to stories. My hopes in implementing this project and creating this type of learning environment for my students is that they will positively be influenced and the level of learning, interaction and engagement will increase. Thank you from all of us.
