I teach an adapted language arts course, which is designed specifically for students with special needs. All of my students have struggled with reading throughout their schooling, with a majority of them classified as beginning readers. Throughout the school year, many of my students have been reluctant to begin independent reading, as reading is a continual struggle. With some of my students, English is a second language, which is another factor in their reluctance to reading. The only books my students have connected with throughout the school year are illustrated books, which are in short supply. These hi-lo books and graphic novels will help stimulate a love of literature in all of my students with special needs that have not found engaging books at their reading levels. Our school library has an excellent selection of graphic novels and stories that are at a 6th grade reading level, but has only a small section dedicated to lower reading levels. Each of the books selected in this project are graphic novels or hi-lo novels, which are written at a low reading level, but have topics that are at a higher grade level interest. With these books, my students will be able to find books that keep them interested and books that have pictures that help them to understand what they are reading.
