Can you imagine a day of learning where your brain is active and focused because you were able to choose the best place to learn? Flexible seating allows students to take charge of their learning. In a flexible seating classroom students get to move, stay focused, and problem solve. We are preparing students for jobs that don't even exist in the current workforce. In a 21st Century classroom students are highly engaged in learning. Flexible seating allows students to make seating choices to fit their different learning styles. Students take ownership of their learning through choice. Exercise and movement allows students to stay focused in their learning. While using the exercise/stability balls and wobble stools students use core muscles. Standing desks and foot bands allow students to use leg muscles. The ability to move during learning allows more oxygen to flow through the body, increasing focus on learning. During this time it allows students to have an outlet for movement without interrupting their learning. Many students who struggle to pay attention will benefit from flexible seating. Students with Autism, sensory disorders, and special needs are allowed feel safe and comfortable in their chosen seat. Flexible seating options are meant to support all learners. In my class I will have traditional seating, floor/lap desks, stability balls, sensory cushions, and standing desks to meet the needs of all of my students. Flexible seating allows students to build a community of learners, each focused not only on their learning, but what is best for their classmates learning as well.
