In our classroom, the STEAM Station is a hub of activity every day. For the station to have meaningful projects that connect to our Learning Goals, we must have supplies that allow our engineers, coders, plant geneticist, etc. do their jobs. One example would be the Carolina Fast Grow Kit, seeds, and light. With these supplies, my students become environmental engineers, agricultural business managers, and plant geneticists to name a few. They will be planting the seeds, documenting their growth, pollinating the flowers using bee sticks they create. During this project, the students will see the growing cycle from seed to seed and all the steps in between. Another example would be the Snap Circuits. With this project, students are becoming electricians or electrical engineers. They work through creating different types of circuits as a team and then explain their project to the rest of the class. Another example is using Dash. With this project, my students become computer, software, and mechanical engineers. Dash is a robot the students can code to make him do we they want him to do. One of the stories we will read is about a team of sled dogs racing in the Iditarod. The students will create a sled and then code Dash to pull their sled through the race. As you can see, these projects will spur excitement for math and science. Your support will make a huge difference in the level of connection we will make with the students. These supplies provide the students real materials to create, grow, and investigate the world around them. My students will never forget the impact of these experiences. I fully believe that the connections made this year will make a major impression on their future as they prepare them for college career readiness.
